FOOTBALL: Chargers clinch postseason berth

CARBONDALE—It’s been 12 long years since the Santa Fe Trail Chargers made the playoffs, but by all accounts, it’s been a good year for the boys in blue. The Chargers secured their spot with a 22-15 win over Prairie View Friday at home.

“It was a big win for our program,” said SFT coach Jayson Duncan. “Our first playoff berth since 2001. We beat a really good team, and we did it our way by being physical and tough minded.”

The Chargers got behind senior Derric Cashier, who muscled through the Buffaloes’ defense for a 7-yard touchdown, conversion and 131 yards. He also had 2 PAT kicks, and led the defense with 18 tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery.

“Darric had a huge game,” Duncan said.

Chaz Wright rushed for 59 yards and 2 touchdowns, and Cody Vandevord added 73 rushing yards and 54 yards receiving. Weston Gloss was 4 for 9 passing for 51 yards; Daniel Courtwright completed 1 pass for 42 yards.

Connor Fannin had 11 tackles, including 1 for lost yards; Vandevord had 8 tackles and Zach Payne had an interception.

“It was special to win a big game on senior night,” Duncan said. “This group of kids deserved it. They have had incredible perseverance.

“We played these kids at an early age when they were not ready to be a varsity player in hopes for a year like this,” Duncan said. “To be 6-2 and going to the playoffs is exciting and rewarding.”

The Chargers (4-1 district and league) will settle the district and league championship at 7 p.m. Friday at Osawatomie (6-2, 4-1 district and league). The winner will take on the runner up of District 1, the winner of Perry-Lecompton and Jefferson West, with the loser playing Holton in the first round on Nov. 7.
