Two killed, two injured in I-35 rollover

WAVERLY—Two Coffey County residents, Krystal R. Smith, 26, and Cory M. Sheppard, 4, both of New Strawn, were killed in a one-vehicle rollover at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14. The accident occurred at milepost 162 on Interstate 35, approximately 4 miles north of the Waverly exit.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Smith was southbound on I-35, driving a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee. For an unknown reason, Smith’s SUV left the roadway and entered the median. She attempted to bring the vehicle back onto the roadway. She overcorrected, causing the vehicle to overturn several times before coming to rest on its wheels, facing southeast, in the west ditch.

Two other passengers, Christian M. Smith, 9, New Strawn, and Doavan J. Krutchfield, 6, New Strawn, were injured and transported by Osage County EMS to Overland Park Regional Medical Center. The children were stabilized and transferred to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. Smith and Sheppard’s bodies were taken to Frontier Forensics in Kansas City.

According to the accident report, all of the occupants were wearing seat belts.
