Geraldine Phillips

April 9, 1921 – March 10, 2018

CARBONDALE — Geraldine Phillips, 96, died Sunday, March 10, 2018, at her home in Carbondale. She was 96.

She was born April 9, 1921, at Hoyt, the daughter of Ray and Laura Tucker Shively. She lived most of her life around Scranton and Carbondale. She graduated from Carbondale High School in 1939.

Samuel Andrew Hutchinson

Nov. 17, 1930 – March 8, 2018

TOPEKA — Samuel Andrew Hutchinson, Topeka, died Thursday, March 8, 2018, at McCrite Plaza. He was 87.

He was born Nov. 17, 1930, at Strawn, the son of Samuel A. and Marian Hazel Baxter Hutchinson. He grew up at Strawn, attended rural school, and graduated from Strawn High School in 1948. He then studied industrial engineering, earning his bachelor’s degree from KSTC in Emporia.

Chance Ellis

Sept. 16, 1981 – March 7, 2018

TOPEKA — Chance Ellis died Wednesday, March 7, 2018, at Topeka. He was 36.

He was born Sept. 16, 1981, at Emporia, the son of Robert and Bonnie Abernathy Ellis. He earned his Eagle Scout and worked as a construction contractor.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Bonnie.

James Russell Moreland

Aug. 24, 1969 – March 7, 2018

OSAGE CITY — James Russell “Russ” Moreland died Wednesday, March 7, 2018, at his home. He was 48.

He was born Aug. 24, 1969, at Bellflower, Calif., the son of James Thomas and Barbara Ann Pannell Moreland. He had live in Chino, Calif., until moving to Osage City in 1992. He worked in auto body repair and paint.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Carl and Myrtle Moreland and Lee and Jean Pannell; his father, James Thomas Moreland; and a cousin, Dane Pannell.

Alexander O’Brien

June 5, 1996 – March 5, 2018

KANSAS CITY — Alexander O’Brien, Lawrence, died Monday, March 5, 2018, at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City. He was 21.

A celebration will be 10 a.m. Saturday, March 10 at Grace Community Church, 310 E. Eighth St., Overbrook.

Memorial contributions may be made in his honor to KSDS Assistance Dogs of Washington, KS or the FUSE Foundation of Dodge City, and sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

Lorn V. McNabb

June 24, 1929 – Feb. 6, 2018

TOPEKA — Lorn V. McNabb, 88, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2018, at Stormont-Vail Hospital, Topeka. He was 88.

He was born June 24, 1929, at Melvern, the son of Lester and Clara Patterson McNabb. He grew up in Melvern and graduated from Melvern High School in 1947. He lived in Topeka for many years.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber in Topeka for 35 years. He was a member of Local No. 307 and a 65-year member of the Melvern Masonic Lodge No. 22.

Ruth Watkinson Tosone

May 19, 1929 – Jan. 30, 2018

OVERLAND PARK — Ruth Watkinson Tosone, Overland Park, died Jan. 30, 2018. She was 88.

She was born May 19, 1929, at Burlingame, the daughter of Henry and Hazel Dunn. She was raised in Burlingame.

She married Sam Watkinson. He preceded her in death in 1971. She then married Hugh Tosone. He preceded her in death.

She loved gardening and travel. Her and her husband, Hugh, were very active in the Berlin Airlift Historical Foundation.

She is preceded in death by her parents and both husbands.

Roger LeRoy Gustafson

Jan. 24, 1932 – Jan. 22, 2018

TOPEKA — Roger LeRoy Gustafson, Topeka, received his permanent set of wings on Jan. 22, 2018. He was 85.

He was born Jan. 24, 1932, the son of Fred and Mary Gustafson. He grew up in Topeka, graduating from Highland Park High School. He attended Kansas State University where he earned his bachelor of science degree in animal science in 1954.

Shirley Jean Best

March 6, 1935 – Feb. 4, 2018

SCRANTON — Shirley Jean Best, Scranton, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2018, at her home. She was 82.

She was born March 6, 1935, in Jefferson County, the daughter of Loyd Ray and Irene Iva Barnard Angel.

She lived in Oskaloosa before moving to Scranton in 1989. She was a member of Cross Road Community Church.

She married Bennie D. Best Sr. Feb. 26, 1953, at Topeka. He preceded her in death on Oct. 6, 1997.

Harold W. Meneley

Aug. 5, 1923 – Feb. 2, 2018

OTTAWA — Harold W. Meneley, Quenemo, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2018, at Ottawa Retirement Village, Ottawa. He was 94.

He was born Aug. 5, 1923, Maxon, the son of J.C. and Eva Kimes Meneley. He lived most of his life in and around the Melvern and Quenemo communities. He graduated from Melvern High School.

He worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber, Topeka, until his retirement in 1983. He farmed the family farm near Melvern where he spent countless hours and loved so much. He was a member of the Quenemo Baptist Church.
