Eleanor Leon Phelon Smith

OVERBROOK — Eleanor Leon Phelon Smith, Scranton, died Friday, May 25, 2018, at Brookside Retirement Community, Overbrook. She was 103.

She was born Jan. 27, 1915, the daughter of Clyde Roy and Olive Elizabeth Thompson Phelon.

Before her marriage, she worked as a childcare provider, telephone operator and schoolteacher.

She married Walter J. Smith Sept. 3,1938. He preceded her in death in 2008.

J. Annette Hurt Lyter Miles

Feb. 19, 1938 – May 25, 2018

TOPEKA — J. Annette Hurt Lyter Miles, Topeka, formerly of Osage County, got her wings on Friday, May 25, 2018. She was 80.

She was born Feb. 19, 1938, at Harwood, Mo., the daughter of Alice Hamby Hurt and Adelbert Hurt.

First and foremost, she loved the Lord, followed closely by her family, animals and most anyone she met. She was exceptionally caring and giving, especially to those in need.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Dickie Lyter and Roland Miles; and two grandsons, Richard and Ralph Ippert.

Michael John Hatton

March 8, 1959 – April 21, 2018

TOPEKA — Michael John Hatton died April 21, 2018, at Topeka. He was 59.

He was born March 8, 1959. He graduated in 1977 from Taft High School, Lincoln City, Ore.

Janet Gilliland

July 11, 1944 – May 28, 2018

WICHITA — Janet Mustard Gilliland, Andover, died Monday, May 28, 2018, at Wichita. She was 73.

She was born July 11, 1944, at Wichita, the daughter of Thomas and Esther Maye Davison Mustard. She grew up in Wichita and graduated high school in 1962.

She attended Emporia State University and received her bachelor's degree in secondary education in 1966. She earned her elementary certificate and taught sixth grade in the Gardner Schools for three years.

Reverend Suellen G. Wood

March 4, 1944 – May 29, 2018

TOPEA — Reverend Suellen G. Wood died Tuesday, May 29, 2018, at Brewster Place, Topeka. She was 74.

Suellen Georgann Hoffmeister was born March 4, 1944, at Barrington, Ill., the daughter of Helen Euson Hoffmeister and Walter William Hoffmeister.

Her parents divorced in 1949. She and her mother went to live with Helen’s mother Kathleen. Her mom found love again in Robert Nixon Gray and they were married Dec. 23, 1955.

George E. Sanders

Nov. 13, 1935 – May 25, 2018

TOPEKA — George E. “Shorty” Sanders, Vassar, died Friday, May 25, 2018, at Stormont Vail Hospital, Topeka. He was 82.

A memorial visitation will be held 5:30 to 7 p.m. May 30 at Dengel and Son Mortuary. A small memorial will be said at the beginning of the visitation.

Dengel and Son Mortuary, Ottawa, assisted the family.

Annette Lyter Miles

Died - May 25, 2018

TOPEKA - Annette Lyter Miles, 80, Topeka, Kansas, formerly of Osage County, died Friday, May 25, 2018. She was 80.

Funeral services will be 5 p.m. Friday, June 1 at Carbondale Church of Christian Fellowship, Carbondale. Visitation will be 4 p.m. until service time Friday at the church.

Arlie Ann Gilmore Seitz

1932 – May 7, 2018

OVERBROOK — Arlie Ann Gilmore Seitz was looking forward to hearing and sharing more family history, but instead slipped away peacefully in her sleep May 7, 2018. She was 86.

She was born in 1932, at Overbrook and lived in or traveled through more than a dozen countries as the wife of West Point graduate, LTC Robert Jordan Seitz (1928-2005). The mother of four children, she instilled confidence with her unwavering, unconditional support and love, as well as her lifelong dedication to hard work and community service.

Robert Elder

Feb. 18, 1938 – May 22, 2018

LYNDON — Robert Elder died Tuesday, May 22, 2018, at his home in Lyndon. He was 80.

He was born Feb. 18, 1938, at Pittsburgh, Penn., the son of William and Margaret Neuman Elder.

He lived in Melvern for many years and moved to Lyndon in the last year. He worked for the Santa Fe Railroad as a purchasing agent for 30 years until his retirement. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a member of the Melvern American Legion Post No. 317 and Vassar Zion Lutheran Church.
