SFT undefeated after 36-28 win

BURLINGTON — The Santa Fe Trail Chargers remain undefeated after a win against the Burlington Wildcats 36-28 Friday Sept. 8 in Burlington.

The Chargers took an early 8 point lead in the first quarter and by halftime had accumulated 22 points to Burlington’s 12.

Player Andrew Berckefeldt had a quarterback rating of 105.4 with 164 yards, Will Herren had three touchdowns and 141 yards and Angel Esparza had two touchdowns and 150 yards.

Indians send 14 qualifiers to State

The Osage City track team qualified 14 athletes and will be bringing five alternates to compete in the State Championships in Wichita. Indians will compete in 12 different events. Of the athletes who qualified, Carter Swindale placed first in the Regionals for javelin, setting a new school record.

Girls 4 x 800m - Joy Steele, Miah McCue, Britney Wilkins, and Kenna Butterfield.

Bearcats claim third in double overtime

HAYS — The Burlingame Bearcats took third place in Class 1A Division I State Basketball Championship, beating the St. Francis Indians with a final score of 59-56 March 11 at Butch Gross Coliseum in Hays.

“We were able to force overtime and then a second overtime,” said Creighton Winters, Bearcats head coach. “Zach Herrick came in and had seven points in the second overtime and hit the game winning three at the buzzer.”

Bearcats overtake Osborne in first round of state

HAYS — The Burlingame Bearcats continued their state run with a 63-53 overtime win against Osborne in first round of the Class 1A Division I State Basketball Tournament Thursday in Hays.

The Bearcats trailed for 32 minutes and 25 seconds of the game, with Osborne leading by as many as 9 points in the third quarter.

Fort receives Coach of the Year award

OSAGE CITY — Osage City High School Head Basketball Coach Dennis Fort received the National Federation of State High School Associations 2016 Midwest Sectional Coach of the Year award for boys basketball.

Gary Musselman, executive director of the Kansas State High School Activities Association, presented Fort with the award Feb. 15. Fort was named KSHSAA’s Coach of the Year for all classes, and was submitted by the organization for recognition at the next level. The Midwest Section includes Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota.

Chargers send seven wrestlers to state

CARBONDALE — The Chargers wrapped up a trio of home wrestling events with a third-place team finish in the Class 4A Regional Wrestling Tournament Feb. 17-18 at Santa Fe Trail High School.

“This was the third week in a row of hosting big events, and it was a good one,” said Regan Erickson, Chargers head coach. “Overall, we wrestled pretty well. Getting seven wrestlers in the top three, with us going seven for seven in the final round, is a great way to finish.”

The Chargers won four championship matches and three third-place matches to place third overall.

Burlingame Winter Royalty rescheduled for Jan. 19

The threat of icy conditions, and school closings for many opponents, led to the cancelling of area sporting events last weekend.

Burlingame High School was scheduled to host Olpe Jan. 13 for its Winter Royalty basketball games. The games have been rescheduled for Thursday, Jan. 19.

Marais des Cygnes Valley’s basketball games at Lebo have also been reschedule for tonight.

Osage City basketball games at Lyndon have been postponed to Jan. 24.

Hastings, Pringle selected for 2017 Shrine Bowl

EL DORADO—The Kansas Shrine Bowl announced selections for the 2017 Shrine Bowl Tuesday. The 44th annual Kansas Shrine Bowl that will be played at 7 p.m. July 29 at BG Products and Veterans Sports Complex at Butler County Community College.

Two Osage County players were among the 34 players selected to the East team – Santa Fe Trail senior Jake Hastings and Lyndon senior Trystan Pringle.
