Edwin Tijerina

March 3, 1930 – Sept. 11, 2019

TOPEKA — Edwin Tijerina, Harveyville, died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2019, at a Topeka hospice facility. He was 89.

He was born March 3, 1930, at Hacienda del Refugio, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, the son of Clemente Tijerina and Amada Tijerina Gonzalez. He was the youngest of 10 siblings.

He received his BA degree in Spanish and drama from Southeastern State University, Durant, Okla. He earned his Master’s degree in foreign language and English through Emporia State University.

Mr. Tijerina, Senor, Mr. T. (depending on the year of the student) was a favorite teacher in the USD 330 school district, Mission Valley School District, for 24 years. Prior to teaching at Mission Valley, he taught in Cedarville, and Cherryvale. He also taught Spanish at Allen Community College, Burlingame.

He was a member of Harveyville United Methodist Church and often favored the congregation with his true love, playing his accordion and singing. He often sang throughout the area for several venues. He could be heard singing one of his favorites, “Pretty Woman,” to many a lady in the area that was celebrating a birthday or anniversary.

He married his sweetheart, Tay Tijerina (Reed), in 1961, at Denison, Texas. She preceded him in death. In 2008, he met his beloved Lois, who survives him.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Eddy Tijerina, Tulsa, Okla.; a daughter, Amadita Tijerina-Kopp, Scranton; four grandchildren; Shane Tijerina (Frankie), Dallas, Texas, Jordan Kopp, Harveyville, Katy Orrell (James), Jenks, Okla., and Luke Tijerina, Tulsa, Okla.

A Celebration of Life service, along with a fiesta, per Ed’s request, will be 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 27, at Harveyville United Methodist. Please come ready to share your best Ed stories. Burial will be private at Wilmington Cemetery.
