William Kenneth Verna

Feb. 8, 1928 – Aug. 28, 2014

TOPEKA—William Kenneth “Sonny” Verna, Topeka, died Aug. 28, 2014 at his home. He was 86.

He was born Feb. 8, 1928, at Topeka, the son of Alexander and Isabelle Curley Verna. He served in The U.S. Marine Corps from February 1946 to November 1947 and also served in the U.S. Army from April 1950, retiring as a Sergeant First Class in April 1969. During his military career, he served in China, three tours in Germany and during the Korean Conflict. He retired from the Santa Fe Railroad in 1986.

He was preceded in death by two stepchildren, Terri Smith and Cindy Finan.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Kay Simons of 37 years; three daughters, Isabelle Hosey and husband, Daniel, Topeka, Katharina Constance and husband, Keith, Fredericksburg, Va., and Jacky Verna, Vancouver, Wash.; three grandchildren, Nicole Constance, Melissa Constance and Savannah Kerber; four stepchildren, Lori Miller, Kathy Bell, Elizabeth McMurray and Kevin Trimble, all of Topeka; numerous step-grandchildren; a sister, Shirley Klaus, Ada, Okla.; and two nieces, Connie Foil and Patty Laramore.

A funeral ceremony will be 10 a.m. Sept. 4 at the Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 N.W. Independence Ave, Topeka. Interment with military honors by Ft. Riley Funeral Detail will follow at Osage City Cemetery. Sonny will lie in state after 3 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m.
