2017 City, school board election results

Burlingame mayor, most USD 454 board members keep seats
LYNDON — Burlingame mayor Vikki Demars easily fended off a challenge from Ethan Greene after results of the 2017 city and school board elections were announced. Demars received 174 votes to Greene's 27.
Write-in votes still were being counted, but the rest of the results are attached.
All but one of the Burlingame USD 454 school board members up for election this year kept their seats. All faced at least one challenger.
Position 4: Incumbent Billie L. McClure bested Anne Baer, 158 to 126.

Ruth Masters Whitaker

Oct. 24, 1944 – Oct. 19, 2017

TOPEKA — Ruth Masters Whitaker, Topeka, died Oct. 19, 2017. She was 72.

She was born Oct. 24, 1944 the daughter of Gilbert and Mary Masters.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jennifer; and two brothers, Don and Mick.

She is survived by a son, Christopher; seven grandchildren; and three brothers, Terry, Gilbert(Bud) and Jim.

Charles McNelly

Died – Nov. 2, 2017

OSAGE CITY — Charles McNelly left Nov. 2, 2017, for an extended hunting and fishing trip. He was 89.

He was a veteran of WW II, Korean and Vietnam wars. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Seabee and the U.S. Army and Air Force. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Distinguished Service Cross and many other medals. He worked as a park ranger at Tuttle Creek and Pomona Lakes.

He enjoyed rodeos, dancing and spending time with his beloved wife, Chris McNelly, family and friends.

Ellis Swarts

May 11, 1922 – Nov. 2, 2017

OSAGE CITY — Ellis Swarts died Nov. 2, 2017, at Osage City. He was 95.

He was born May 11, 1922.

Funeral services are pending.

James Sosebee

Dec. 10, 1941 – Aug. 26, 2017

TOPEKA — James “Rock” Sosebee, Vassar, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2017, at V.A. Medical Center, Topeka. He was 75.

He was born Dec. 10, 1941, at Beaufort, S.C., the son of James and Blanche Cobb Sosebee. He grew up in South Carolina and lived in North Carolina and Arizona before moving to Lake Pomona near Vassar in 1994.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1959 to 1963. He worked most of his life in construction as a steel worker. He was a member of the Tar Heel Stompers Motorcycle Club and then the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club.

Humbert Emil Rosetta

July 14, 1935 – Nov. 2, 2017

OSAGE CITY — Humbert Emil Rosetta passed away peacefully Nov. 2, 2017. He was 82.

He was born July 14, 1935, at Osage City, the son of Grace Bailey Rosetta and Humbert S. Rosetta. He lived his entire life in Osage City.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Osage City.

He married Darlene Sahlberg July 17, 1954. She survives of the home.

Sue Marie Martin

June 25, 1956 – Oct. 31, 2017

OLATHE — Sue Marie Martin died Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2017, at Olathe Medical Center, Olathe. She was 61.

She was born June 25, 1956, at Ransom Memorial Hospital, Ottawa, the daughter of George Ellis Martin and Evelyn Nadine Chambers Martin. She lived most of her life in the Overbrook and Ottawa communities.

She graduated from Santa Fe Trail High School and Ottawa University. She worked for Ransom Memorial Hospital for 40 years as a social worker and then as executive director of human resources.

Donald Atchison

Jan. 20, 1923 – Oct. 31, 2017

DENTON, Texas — Donald R. Atchison died Oct. 31, 2017 at Denton, Texas. He was 94.

He was born Jan. 20, 1931.

Graveside services will be 10:30 a.m. Nov. 4 at Overbrook Cemetery.
