M. Marie Hulsopple

April 28, 1930 – Dec. 5, 2014

TOPEKA—M. Marie Hulsopple, Scranton, died Dec. 5, 2014, at a Topeka hospital. She was 84.

She was born April 28, 1930, at Alta Vista, the daughter of Jerry and Ester Newcomb Litke. She graduated from Alta Vista High School and worked for Hallmark Paper Products in Topeka, where she retired after 20 years of service.

She was a member of the Cross Road Community Church, the Church Women’s Group, and Scranton Lions Club.

She married Larry D. Hulsopple July 14 1967. He survives of the home.

Roy Allen Habegger

Sept. 13, 1946 – Dec. 4, 2014

QUENEMO—Roy Allen Habegger, rural Quenemo, died Dec. 4, 2014, at his home. He was 68.

He was born Sept. 13, 1946, at Sabetha, the son of Dell and Irene Wardlow Habegger. He attended school in Sabetha until his junior year. He moved with his family to Warsaw, Mo., after the death of his mother.

He graduated from Warsaw High School in 1964. He joined the U.S. Navy after graduating and served for three years.

He married Rita Saffle, Feb. 10, 1971. She survives of the home.

Scranton prepares for water project bids

SCRANTON—Brian Foster, of BG Consultants, Inc., project engineer for the City of Scranton’s water project, spoke with the city about water meters and bid alternates during the Dec. 2 city council meeting.

“The City of Scranton requires a system that can read both electric and water meters. The project budget was established with drive-by radio frequency meters,” Foster said. “The systems available that can read both electric and water is somewhat limited.”

OSAGE CITY—Two lucky winners each claimed $50 in scrip last week as part of the Christmas On Us promotion being sponsored by 33 Osage County businesses and The Osage County Herald-Chronicle.

Quenemo council denies request for free rental

QUENEMO—Quenemo city council denied a request for a free community building rental when they met Dec. 2.

Christina Hill, city clerk, informed the council of Diann Priddy’s request for free use of the community building for a holiday baking activity.

“She’s wanting to do some kind of a community candy and cookie baking for Christmas,” said Hill. “She wants to announce it around the city, have people come in and do their baking.”

“I think we need to have a better explanation of it,” said Steve Casteel, council member.

Melvern staff to receive holiday bonuses

MEVERN – Discussion on employee Christmas bonuses opened the Melvern City Council meeting Monday, followed by a five-minute closed session to discuss the matter. Upon return to open session, the council unanimously approved the following: a $200 bonus for full time city employees, a $100 bonus for part time employees, and a $50 bonus for interns at the police department.

Foundation reopens grant application window

OSAGE CITY—The Osage County Community Foundation has re-opened its annual window for grant applications, beginning immediately and continuing until Jan. 15, 2015.

The foundation makes annual grants for innovative and creative projects and programs that are responsive to changing community needs in the areas of health, social service, education, recreation and cultural affairs. Grants will not exceed $500 and operational expenses are not funded.

Lyndon Christmas parade, craft fair Saturday

Lyndon will be hosting its annual Winter Festival Saturday, including a Christmas craft fair and parade.

The craft fair will be 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Lyndon High School gym. The annual parade begins at 10:30 a.m. and will run from Main Street to Sixth Street. Santa Claus will be at the high school to visit with children following the parade.

Carbondale to host holiday event Sunday

Carbondale will be hosting “Christmas in Carbondale” Sunday, Dec. 7, with many activities planned for the day. The day begins with a business and craft fair 11 a.m.-4 p.m. in the ELM Community Building. Those interested in being a vendor may contact Mary Burgett at (785) 836-7887.
