Boy Scout Klondike Derby is Saturday

MELVERN LAKE—The annual Boy Scout Klondike Derby will be held 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Saturday at Turkey Point, Melvern Lake.

This is a large event in which Scouts from the entire Jayhawk Boy Scout Council will be attending. There are 10 counties in Jayhawk Council, which includes Lyon, Coffey and Osage counties.

Over 500 participants will be attending, of which 350 will be Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts, the rest parents and volunteers.

“This is a fantastic event, especially as our most popular winter event,” said Alex Mosakowski, Sojadi district executive.

Committee studies feasibility of hotel in Osage City

OSAGE CITY—The Osage City Industrial Committee is spearheading a study to determine the feasibility of operating a hotel in Osage City.

“We’ve talked about not having a hotel option,” said Casey Mussatto, committee president, during a presentation to the Osage City Chamber of Commerce Tuesday. “There’s been bed and breakfasts from time to time, but we’ve really been lacking.”

Lena Mitchell

Jan. 14, 1931 – Jan. 19, 2015

TOPEKA—Lena Mitchell, Burlingame, died Jan. 19, 2015, at a Topeka hospital. She was 84.

She was born Jan. 4, 1931, at Ottumwa, the daughter of Jake Elmer and Etta Kiser Morey. She was a homemaker and a woman of many talents. She enjoyed painting, sewing, quilting, canning and cooking. She loved gardening, flowers and birds.

She married Earl J. Mitchell, Aug. 7, 1948, at Bartlesville, Okla. He died Oct. 5, 2003.

Patricia Ann Leighty Davis

March 17, 1923 – Jan. 15, 2015

CENTRALIA—Patricia Ann Leighty Davis, Osage City, died Jan. 15, 2015, at the Eastridge Nursing Facility, Centralia. She was one of six children of Ed and Stella Jones Leighty, Osage City. She was 91.

She was born March 17, 1923, in Osage City Hospital. She was taught to play the piano by her older sister, Dorothy, at an early age and loved to play and continued to play up to shortly before her death.

Marc Edward Lee

Oct. 20, 1962 – Jan. 17, 2015

WAVERLY—Marc Edward Lee, Waverly, died Jan. 17, 2015 at his home. He was 52.

He was born Oct. 20, 1962, at Topeka, the son of Edward E. and Joycelynn Pratt Lee. He graduated from Lyndon High School in 1980, where he moved with his family his sophomore year.

He attended Coffeyville Community College and Emporia State University. Since 1991, he has worked as a mechanic for UPS in Lenexa.

He married Michelle M. Lichtenauer, June 23, 1990, Lenexa. She survives. They are the parents of two sons and two daughters.

Donald Duane Arb

March 10, 1936 - December 24, 2014

MELVERN—Donald Duane Arb, formerly of Melvern, Kansas, died Dec. 24, 2014, at Sweet Water, Texas. He was 78.

He was born on March 10, 1936, at Melvern, Kansas, the son of Earl E. and Mary A. Arb. He grew up in Melvern and attended Melvern schools.

He was a self-employed truck driver for 50 years. He was the sole owner of a trucking company in Texas, where he lived most of his adult life.

Filing deadline approaches for city, school elections

OSAGE COUNTY—Several school board and city official openings in 2015 call for a deadline for candidates to file.
Noon Jan. 27 is that deadline for the April 7 general election. A primary election will be March 3, if needed

School board positions should file at the Osage County Clerk’s Office, located at the courthouse, Lyndon. Municipal positions may file with the city clerk of the appropriate city. A filing fee or petition applies. Contact school boards or city offices for more information.

Waverly teen killed in ATV accident

WAVERLY—Derrek Alan Bowers, 14, Waverly, was killed in an ATV accident at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at 23rd and Reaper Roads, approximately two miles southwest of Waverly.

According to the Coffey County Sheriff’s Office, Derrek and his father, Roy Alan Bowers, 44, Waverly, had just unbuckled to switch drivers. Roy said he drove through the ditch into the grassy meadow to turn around when the accident happened.
