Alice Roberta Peterson

Nov. 7, 1948 – Sept. 5, 2014

CARBONDALE—Alice Roberta Peterson, Carbondale, died Sept. 5, 2014, at her mother’s home surrounded by family. She was 65.

She was born Nov. 7, 1948, at Herington, the daughter of Robert D. and Alice Massey Morris. She attended Topeka schools. She was a member of the Meriden United Methodist Church.

She married Fred Bradshaw in 1965. To this union, four children were born. They later divorced. She married Randy Peterson in 1986, and later divorced.

N. Linda Devin

Dec. 12, 1957 – Sept. 1, 2014

OLATHE—N. Linda Devin, Lyndon, died Sept. 1, 2014, at Olathe Medical Center. She was 56.

She was born Dec. 12, 1957, at Ottawa, the daughter of Bron and Vivian Watts Devin. She grew up in Pomona and had lived in Lyndon for the last 15 years.

She graduated from Pomona High School and Baker Nursing School. She worked at Green Acres Restaurant for many years and managed the Ottawa Country Club for six years.

She married Richard Williams. He survives of the home.

Commissioners eye options for salt

LYNDON—Not necessarily thought of too often until the wintertime, the salt the road and bridge department obtains to help keep drivers on the roads might have difficulty of its own making it into county truckloads.

Glen Tyson, county road and bridge supervisor, met with commissioners Tuesday to discuss the possibility of looking into new ways to obtain pure salt for roads.

“I know it’s a long ways from winter yet, but we may have a heck of an issue about salt,” he said.

Vanessa Owens-Waller

July 16, 1969 – Aug. 31, 2014

OSAGE CITY—Vanessa Owens-Waller, Osage City, died Aug. 31, 2014 after a battle with cancer. She was 45.

She was born July 16, 1969, at Chanute, the daughter of George Bearden and Verna Owens. She attended Chanute High School.

She married Jeremy Waller in 1995. He survives.

She was a homemaker and devoted wife and mother. She loved spending time with her family. Her beautiful smile and warm heart will be missed.

She was preceded in death by her father; a sister, Regina Brooks; and a brother, Todd Owens.

L.D. Crumb

Aug. 29, 2014

WAVERLY—L.D. Crumb, Waverly, died August 29, 2014, at the Sunset Manor Nursing Home, in Waverly. He was 77.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Sept. 3 at Shelter House, Waverly Cemetery. There will be no visitation.

Memorial contributions may be made to Coffey County Cancer Support Group and sent in care of Jones Funeral Home, P.O. Box 277, Burlington, KS 66839.

Isabelle Irene Bruce

Sept. 13, 1926 ¬– Aug. 29, 2014

OSAGE CITY—Isabelle Irene Bruce died Aug. 29, 2014, at Peterson Nursing Home, Osage City. She was 87.

She was born Sept. 13, 1926, at Burlington, the daughter of William and Pearl Irene McGhann Germann. She was a graduate of New Strawn High School.

She married Woodrow “Woody” Bruce Oct. 12, 1946, at Cottonwood Falls. He preceded her in death on Sept. 3, 1968.

She was a switchboard operator for Southwestern Bell for over 50 years until her retirement in the mid 1980’s.

William Kenneth Verna

Feb. 8, 1928 – Aug. 28, 2014

TOPEKA—William Kenneth “Sonny” Verna, Topeka, died Aug. 28, 2014 at his home. He was 86.

He was born Feb. 8, 1928, at Topeka, the son of Alexander and Isabelle Curley Verna. He served in The U.S. Marine Corps from February 1946 to November 1947 and also served in the U.S. Army from April 1950, retiring as a Sergeant First Class in April 1969. During his military career, he served in China, three tours in Germany and during the Korean Conflict. He retired from the Santa Fe Railroad in 1986.

KHP requests assistance in fatality crash

This past Sunday, Aug. 24, the Kansas Highway Patrol investigated a collision outside of Overbrook on US-56 Highway, milepost 409, between Croco Road and Paulen Road, Osage County. It is believed that a vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian who was walking that particular part of the highway. The collision occurred at approximately 5:05 a.m. on Sunday.

Cause of infant death not yet determined

LYNDON—At 12:08 p.m. Aug. 25, the Osage County Sheriff’s Office 911 Communication Center received a call of a child not breathing.

Osage County EMS, Fire District No. 5, Lyndon Police Department and the Osage County Sheriff’s Office responded to a daycare located at 1020 Monroe St., Lyndon.

The child, Brody Johnston, 4 months, Scranton, was transported by Osage EMS to a Topeka hospital. He died while en route to the hospital.

The family of Johnston reports his organs were donated and as a result two infants lives have been saved.
