City approves payments, extends electrical project

BURLINGAME—To accommodate numerous delays of the project to upgrade the city’s municipal electric service system, the Burlingame City Council approved a six-month extension at its Jan. 18 meeting. The council’s action moved the completion date to Sept. 30.

Council reviews youth lake bridge options; deceased council member eulogized at informal meeting

OVERBROOK—The Overbrook City Hall chambers were filled to capacity with guests and citizens for an informal meeting Feb. 20 to hear proposals from a group of graduate students from the University of Kansas School of Engineering and the Department of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering. Their presentation was to give the citizens of Overbrook an overview of four bridge designs that could be used and constructed at the Overbrook Youth Fishing Pond.

Health department to sponsor senior clinic

LYNDON—Anne Gray, Osage County health department director, informed commissioners and officials that the health department would sponsor the upcoming senior healthcare clinic at the senior center. Gray said PRN Home Health normally sponsors the event, but is unable to this year due to changes in staffing. Gray also said flu shots are still available at the health department.

I've been throwing myself out of an airplane 100 to 200 times a year since 1989, and often taking first timers with me. So I feel I know a little about Risk Assessment. (I know nothing about risk management because I think trying to manage risk is like trying to hold air in your hands.) A question such as this undoubtedly has risk associated with it. But the flip side to risk is reward. I only take on risk that I have thoroughly evaluated as acceptable based on the reward I will get.

U.S. 75 bridge approach project to begin March 10

OSAGE COUNTY—A pavement approach replacement project will begin March 10 on a total of eight bridges along an eight-mile stretch of the of U.S. 75 from the Marais des Cygnes River bridge to the south Osage-Coffey county line, as weather permits. Project work includes the replacement of approximately 30-40 ft. of the concrete bridge approach pavement and all new pavement markings. Work will take place during daylight hours, Monday through Friday, with some occasional Saturday work.

Officers to increase seatbelt citations

Beginning Feb. 24 and running through March 7, the Osage County Sheriff’s Office will join other Kansas law enforcement to stop what has been an epidemic for the past several years, not being properly restrained.

Melvern Sunflower Days planned for June 19-21

The dates for the Melvern 4-H Sunflower Days have been set for June 19-21. Lewellen Amusements Carnival will provide rides, concessions and games for all three nights of the fair.

Bingo will be also held all three nights, along with a baby show and other evening entertainment. The grand parade will be held Saturday evening, June 21.

There will be 4-H projects displayed and judged throughout the three days. Homemade ice cream will also be served all three nights.

Those interested may mark their calendar and plan to attend the 2014 Melvern 4-H Sunflower Days.
